GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered.

31 questions

What is the First 100?

Our founding campaign aims to help 100 Bay Area tech workers finish their first full marathon. There is no enrollment or completed-finisher count yet, and there is no fixed deadline.

Does a relay count toward the First 100?

No. A relay is a team accomplishment. The campaign counts an individual’s first full-marathon finish at an organized race.

What is Bay Area Running’s official marathon?

The Golden Gate Bridge Marathon is our official marathon event. Bay Area Running is its host and official sponsor. The concept is a shared endurance challenge with repeated crossings of the Golden Gate Bridge. Our first edition is in planning; the final course, date, permissions, and registration are pending.

Where can I learn about the Golden Gate Bridge Marathon?

Visit our dedicated event page for the Bay Area Running event plan, proposed solo and relay formats, and event FAQs. The marathon’s own website is goldengatebridgemarathon.com. Its original published concept is repeated back-and-forth bridge crossings at a future date.

Can I register for the Golden Gate Bridge Marathon?

Registration is not open. A confirmed date, participant guide, final route, capacity, and entry terms will be published before signups begin. There is no payment, reservation, or waitlist form on this site.

Is this the same event as The San Francisco Marathon?

No. The Golden Gate Bridge Marathon is the separate event hosted and sponsored by Bay Area Running. The San Francisco Marathon, Oakland Marathon, and California International Marathon are other races we link to for general inspiration; we do not claim to organize or sponsor them.

What is Bay Area Running?

Bay Area Running is a new, independent running-community concept for people working in AI and tech across San Francisco, the East Bay, the Peninsula, and the South Bay. The mission is to build a welcoming local running scene and help more people work toward a marathon. This is the founding-stage website; organized runs have not launched yet.

Do I need to work at an AI company?

No. AI and tech workers are the starting community, not an entry requirement. People in any role, students, career changers, friends, and partners are welcome. No employer verification, job title, or company email is required.

I’m not a runner. Is this for me?

Yes. The proposed run/walk and social crews are designed to welcome people starting from scratch. You do not need a race time or a fitness tracker. Choose an easy format and build up gradually at your own pace; the marathon is a long-term possibility, not a condition of belonging.

Is the community live? Can I RSVP?

Not yet. The six crews shown here are proposed formats. Dates, captains, exact meeting points, routes, and run-specific details still need to be confirmed. There are no live RSVPs, paid memberships, or bookings on this website. Do not turn up expecting an organized event.

How much will it cost?

No money is collected on this website. The intent is to keep casual community runs free. Any future coached program, special event, or membership would clearly state its price before you sign up. Race entries, transport, gear, and post-run food are separate personal expenses.

What should I bring to a first run?

Comfortable running shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are enough to start. Carry what you need for the outing, including water, any personal essentials, and a charged phone. Check the published run details for lights, route conditions, duration, and available facilities once events launch.

What does “no-drop” mean?

For our proposed social runs, a designated rear leader stays with the last participant and the crew regroups at agreed points. Walking is welcome. Speed sessions and long-run groups have different formats and will list their expectations. Confirm your group’s pace and distance before a run starts.

How do I pick the right pace group?

Start with the kind of experience you want: conversation, run/walk, a structured faster session, or a longer outing. The crew finder shows the intended format. Exact pace bands will be announced with each event. You can change groups; a pace is a preference for a particular day, not an identity.

Where and when will runs happen?

Proposed areas include the San Francisco waterfront and Golden Gate Park, Lake Merritt in Oakland, Palo Alto, and San José. The crew cards describe morning, after-work, and weekend formats. These are planning ideas, not a recurring event schedule or confirmed route.

Can I bring a friend, a dog, or a stroller?

Friends are welcome under the same event rules. Dogs and strollers will depend on the specific route, space, and session format; confirm with the run leader before bringing either. An event should state accessibility and participation details before RSVPs open.

What happens in bad weather or poor air quality?

A future event listing should state how cancellations and changes are communicated. Run leaders should review local conditions and choose a safe alternative or cancel when appropriate. Never assume a run is happening based only on the proposed crew cards on this site.

Are there changing rooms or bag storage?

No facilities are promised. Meeting-point details will specify toilets, drinking water, transit options, and any storage once a run is confirmed. Arrive ready to run and avoid bringing anything you cannot comfortably carry unless storage is explicitly provided.

Do I have to commit to a marathon right away?

No. A marathon is the shared north star, but walking regularly, your first 5K, or a social run each week can be the right goal today. You remain part of the community whether or not you ever race.

How long does it take to get marathon-ready?

It depends on your current fitness, running history, available time, and health. Someone starting from scratch may need a substantial base-building period before beginning a marathon-specific plan. The pathway on this site is an overview, not a personalized training prescription or a finish-time guarantee.

Is coaching included?

No coached program is currently offered. Community run leaders are not automatically qualified coaches. For a structured training plan, work with a qualified running coach who can account for your starting point, and consult a healthcare professional about health or injury concerns. The RRCA resource link is a useful starting place.

Which marathon should I choose?

Compare official race dates, terrain, course cutoffs, entry availability, accessibility, travel, and cost. This site links to the San Francisco Marathon, Oakland Marathon, and California International Marathon as options to research. Those three races are independently organized. Our own official event is the Golden Gate Bridge Marathon, hosted and sponsored by Bay Area Running, with its first edition in planning. No race entries are sold on this site.

What if I miss runs or get injured?

Life happens. There are no streak requirements or penalties for rest. Reassess your goal instead of trying to make up missed mileage all at once. If you have an injury or health concern, seek advice from an appropriate professional before returning to training.

How will company teams work?

The proposed Company Miles Challenge lets coworkers form a crew, with open teams for independent runners. The idea includes separate recognition for consistent participation, first finishes, and optional racing. Enrollment, season dates, team rules, and final scoring have not launched.

Will bigger companies have an unfair advantage?

The proposed consistency score uses participation as a share of a team’s eligible roster rather than total accumulated miles. Roster rules and minimum participation requirements would be published before a season begins. There is no live leaderboard yet.

Can I participate without a company team?

Yes. The proposed format includes open crews for freelancers, students, people between roles, and anyone whose coworkers are not participating. Everyday crew runs are also separate from the optional company challenge.

Are employers sponsoring or endorsing this?

No employer partnership or sponsorship is currently claimed. The community is independent. A team made up of employees would not, by itself, mean their employer endorses Bay Area Running.

Is this a networking or recruiting event?

The purpose is to run and make friends. Talking about work is fine when everyone wants to, but unsolicited pitches, recruiting pressure, and treating people as sales leads are not part of the culture. Good company comes before business opportunity.

What information does this website collect?

There is no account, email signup, payment form, or run registration on this version of the site. Crew and FAQ filters only change the current page. The captain’s kit is generated in your browser. Hosting providers may process routine technical request information, and external links have their own privacy practices.

What is the community code of conduct?

Be welcoming across backgrounds and abilities. Respect boundaries, names, and pronouns. Do not harass, discriminate, pressure people to run faster, or photograph someone without consent. Share paths courteously. Future organized events should identify a responsible lead and a clear route for reporting concerns.

How can I help start a crew?

Use the captain’s starter kit to organize your ideas: a proposed area and format, likely leaders, route checks, a communication plan, and an invitation for your coworkers. Downloading the kit does not register a chapter or create an official Bay Area Running event. Formal captain onboarding is not open yet.
