GOLDEN GATE
BRIDGE MARATHON.

A spectacular view.
A deeply repetitive route.
A very good story afterward.

FIRST EDITION · IN PLANNING

Our official marathon, built for the people who look at a big, slightly unreasonable goal and think: okay, I’m in.

THE IDEA IS SIMPLE. THE LEGS MAY DISAGREE.

BACK. FORTH.
BRAG ABOUT IT.

The original idea: run back and forth across the Golden Gate Bridge. A lot. We’re turning that wonderfully stubborn idea into Bay Area Running’s flagship event.

It’s a shared challenge for the AI researchers, engineers, designers, founders, operators, and friends who spend their days building ambitious things. This time, the ambitious thing is you.

The bridge-crossing concept comes from the marathon’s original website ↗. The formats and experience below are our proposed event plan. Final details will be published before entries open.

THE PROPOSED FORMATS

GO ALL IN.
OR GO TOGETHER.

One big shared goal.
Two ways we’re planning to get there.

01 / SOLO

THE FULL SEND.

26.2 MILE TARGET

For runners ready to take on the full distance themselves. Find your pace, settle into the repetition, and keep familiar faces in view along the way.

  • One runner takes on the full planned distance.
  • Prepare for the distance before choosing this format.
  • Final route, time limits, and support to be announced.
02 / RELAY

SHARED SUFFERING.

2–4 RUNNERS PER TEAM

The proposed relay splits the challenge across a small crew. Bring your coworkers, mix companies, or team up with friends. The shared story is the point.

  • A team shares the full-distance target.
  • Leg distances and exchanges are still being designed.
  • All handoffs must follow the final event instructions.

THE DAY WE’RE PLANNING

BIG EFFORT.
VERY GOOD COMPANY.

A proposed flow, not a published schedule.
Exact times and meeting points are coming later.

01 / BEFORE THE START

MEET. CHECK IN.
GET THE BRIEF.

Find your crew, hear the route and shared-path rules, and get clear on the support and turnaround arrangements.

02 / THE MAIN EVENT

ONE CROSSING.
THEN ANOTHER.

Run your own effort or your relay leg. Keep the pace personal, the encouragement generous, and the path clear.

03 / THE BEST PART

FINISH TOGETHER.
STAY FOR THE STORY.

Celebrate the effort, cheer in your friends, and compare the number of times you considered becoming a cyclist.

18 event questions

What is the Golden Gate Bridge Marathon?

It is Bay Area Running’s official marathon event: a deliberately simple, slightly ridiculous endurance concept built around repeated trips across the Golden Gate Bridge. The ambition is a shared 26.2-mile experience with a strong community spirit. The first edition is still in planning.

Who hosts and sponsors the event?

Bay Area Running is the host and official sponsor of the Golden Gate Bridge Marathon. It is our flagship event for the local AI and tech running community, with friends and runners from other backgrounds welcome.

When is it happening?

The date is to be announced. The original marathon website describes a future event without a fixed date. We will publish a date only once the course, access requirements, operating arrangements, and team are ready. No start time is confirmed.

What is the planned course?

The original idea is repeated back-and-forth crossings of the Golden Gate Bridge. Our plan is to make the bridge the centerpiece of a 26.2-mile target course, with any approach sections and turnaround points defined in a final route. The exact course and crossing count are not confirmed.

Will it be exactly 26.2 miles or a certified race?

The full-distance target is 26.2 miles. A final measured route has not been published, and no certified course or official qualifying status is claimed. Do not use this event as a qualifying race for another marathon unless a future announcement explicitly confirms that status.

Is the bridge closed for the event?

No bridge closure, exclusive access, or event permission has been announced. The plan must work within the bridge operator’s rules and any required approvals. The name of the event does not imply that the Golden Gate Bridge operator sponsors or endorses it.

Can I enter as a solo runner or with a relay team?

The proposed formats are a solo full-distance effort and a shared-distance relay for teams of two to four adults. Relay legs and exchange points will be set in the final participant guide. These are planning formats, not currently available entry categories.

Do I have to work in tech?

No. The event grows out of the Bay Area’s AI and tech running community, but job title and employer are not entry requirements. Bring a friend, a coworker, or a team made up of people from different companies.

Can a beginner participate?

The full-distance format is intended for people who have prepared for a marathon-distance effort. The proposed relay offers a shorter individual commitment. Choose based on your preparation, the final distances, and the final time limits; no pace cutoff has been set yet.

What are the proposed age and participation rules?

Our planning brief is for adults aged 18 and over, with respect for shared paths, other runners, and all published access rules. Final eligibility, waiver terms, accessibility arrangements, and participant responsibilities will be available before registration.

How much does it cost, and where do I register?

Entry pricing is to be announced and registration is not open. There is no payment, booking, or waitlist form on this page. Any fees and what they cover will be published together with registration; no spot can be reserved yet.

What happens if the event changes or gets cancelled?

We will publish the event’s change, cancellation, refund, transfer, and deferral policies before taking registrations or payments. None of those terms is currently finalized. Do not make non-refundable travel plans based on this planning page.

What will the day feel like?

Our proposed sequence is a check-in and route briefing, a staggered or grouped start, the distance challenge, and a shared finish-line hangout. Exact times, locations, waves, and support arrangements will be confirmed in the participant guide.

Will there be water, aid stations, toilets, or bag storage?

Those provisions are not confirmed. The event team’s planning brief includes a clearly identified start/finish hub and published facilities information. Do not assume supplies, storage, toilets, or staffed medical support will be available until the final guide states what is provided.

Is this a race or a social challenge?

The proposed event is about completing a memorable shared challenge. Solo runners and relays can pursue their own goals, and company teams can bring friendly rivalry. Official timing, rankings, competitive divisions, and awards have not been confirmed.

Can spectators, volunteers, dogs, or strollers join?

Spectator areas, volunteer roles, and policies for dogs and strollers will be announced after the route and access plan are settled. Nobody should gather at an assumed start point or create an exchange area on the bridge based on this concept page.

Is this The San Francisco Marathon?

No. This is the Golden Gate Bridge Marathon, hosted and officially sponsored by Bay Area Running. The San Francisco Marathon is a separate event run by a different organizer. Similar geography does not make them the same race.

Where should I look for updates and questions?

Use this event page for Bay Area Running’s planning brief and the linked Golden Gate Bridge Marathon website for the original event concept. The marathon also publishes an information site at info.goldengatebridgemarathon.com. Confirmed registration and contact channels will be added when available.
